Talk about a match made in Marvel heaven. Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky have been together since 2010, and in their time together, they’ve welcomed three kids, moved across the world, and even starred in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder together. But while their lives may look picture-perfect, they’ll be the first to admit they’ve had some bumps in the road. “It’s funny that people think of us as a perfect couple,” Pataky said to Body + Soul magazine in 2020. “No way. It’s been ups and downs, and we still keep working at the relationship.”
Here, we break down Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky’s entire relationship history, from their first encounter to their life now as husband and wife.
May 2024: They walk the carpet with their kids at the Furiosa premiere.
In a rare red-carpet appearance, Pataky supports Hemsworth at the Australia premiere of his new sci-fi action film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, bringing their twin sons to the screening as well.
Pataky stuns in a black lace gown from J’Aton Couture, which she accessorizes with Bulgari jewelry. Hemsworth opts for a plaid gray suit, which he layers over a silky black button-up. On the carpet, the family is also joined by Hemsworth’s parents, Leonie and Craig.
June 2022: Chris and Elsa celebrate their first movie together with a rare family red-carpet appearance.
In Hemsworth’s Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder, his wife makes a cameo as Wolf Woman, a former paramour of the titular superhero’s. This is the first movie the pair have done together, and they celebrate by bringing twins Sasha and Tristan to the Sydney premiere, where the family walks the red carpet.
Pataky and Hemsworth coordinate in black ensembles, with the former sporting a sparkly dress with a high leg slit and keyhole cutout, and the latter choosing a monochromatic suit. Meanwhile, their kids are sweetly formal in button-ups and dress pants.
Not only is this the parents’ first movie together, it is also their first time filming a movie with their kids, who make brief appearances in the film. Hemsworth opens up about the cameos when speaking with reporter Kevin McCarthy, saying, “It’s really cool. They really wanted to be in it.” One of his sons portrays a young version of Thor, while his daughter, India, plays the character Love. “It felt like a one-off fun family experience. I don’t want them to now go and be child stars and actors. It was just a special experience we all had. They loved it, they had a great time.”
December 2020: The pair celebrates 10 years of marriage.
On the day of their 10th wedding anniversary, Hemsworth shares a slideshow of sweet photos and reflects on the state of the world, given that the COVID-19 pandemic struck a mere seven months earlier.
“10 years together!” the Extraction star writes in the caption. “Looking forward to the advancements of modern medicine and science and enjoying a couple hundred more!😘😘❤️❤️😘😘@elsapatakyconfidential.”
October 2017: Chris admits they’ve had their challenges, but says they’ve fallen “back in love.”
In a GQ Australia profile, Hemsworth reveals that he and Pataky have had some bumps in the road, but says they’ve worked through them. “My wife and I fell in love, had kids, didn’t really see each other for a few years, then fell back in love,” he tells the publication. “Once you have children, every instinct and every moment of your time is consumed by that. You’ve got nothing for each other—so make sure you have date night, even if it’s once in a blue moon, because most of the time you’re just too tired and you’d actually prefer to sleep.”
The actor also discusses the sacrifices Pataky had to make once they became parents. “In terms of work, she’s certainly given up more than I have. … She’d like me to step back and be at home with the kids more, and, of course, I want that too.” Later, in 2019, Hemsworth actually takes the year off to spend more time with his family.
2015: The couple decides to move the family to Australia.
As the year comes to a close, Pataky and Hemsworth decide to move their family across the world, from Los Angeles to Hemsworth’s native country of Australia.
The following year, Hemsworth explains the reason for the move to Modern Luxury magazine. “I love what I do as an actor, but when you are surrounded by it constantly, it becomes a bit suffocating,” he says. “It’s nice to have conversations with people and be a part of a community that doesn’t live and breathe that world.” He will reiterate this sentiment to The Sunday Telegraph in 2020, saying, “There’s not a single person that I interact with, or close friends of mine, that are really in the industry and so that’s hugely refreshing. … It’s great for my kids and my wife.”
As for Pataky, she explains how Hemsworth convinced her to make the move while at a L’Oreal Botanicals launch in 2017: “It was just the country, the places he took me, it was just so special, and … has this amazing energy, you feel like you’re on holidays.”
March 2014: Chris and Elsa are now parents … of three!
In the blink of an eye, Pataky and Hemsworth’s household gets even more jam-packed when they welcome twins Sasha and Tristan on March 18.
“They are home!” Pataky writes on her Instagram (translated from Spanish). “Tristan and Sasha arrived to this world on March 18 just after the full moon. Complete happiness!!” In the post, the model shares an image of her newborns’ feet resting side by side.
November 2013: A second child is on the way.
A little over a year after the pair welcomed daughter India, Hemsworth’s publicist reveals that the pair are expecting a second child.
A few months later, at an event announcing the Academy Award nominees, Hemsworth opens up about the pregnancy, saying, “It’s incredibly exciting.”
May 2012: The pair welcomes daughter India Rose.
On May 11, 2012, India Rose Hemsworth is born.
Hemsworth reveals to USA Today how he and Pataky chose the name for their baby daughter, saying, “We love the country and love the name.”
In an interview later with E! News, the actor goes into further detail about how the baby’s name was chosen, saying, “It was just a name we liked, I always kind of liked Indie or Indiana for a boy and she liked India. We sorta went, ‘Oh well, whether it’s a boy or girl, that will decide.’ It just seemed to fit.”
He also adds, “I’ve wanted to have kids for a long time, and here it is, and I couldn’t be happier.”
January 2012: Elsa announces she’s expecting their first child.
In an interview with Hola! magazine, the Spanish model reveals that she and Hemsworth are expecting their first kid together. “Chris and I are ecstatic, very happy and excited,” she tells the outlet. “Since it’s our first child, we don’t care if it’s a boy or girl—our only wish is that it’s healthy.”
The mom-to-be also explains that she plans on speaking solely Spanish to the child. “I’m only going to speak to the baby in Spanish. I already told my husband, ‘Get ready fast with Spanish because, if not, you’re not going to be able to understand what we say.’ ”
December 2010: They tie the knot at Christmastime.
Clearly, Hemsworth and Pataky knew what they had from the moment it started, because the two didn’t waste any time running to the altar.
While still in their first year as a couple, the pair ends up secretly tying the knot during a trip to Australia over the Christmas holidays. Turns out, this was a spur-of-the-moment decision.
Hemsworth will open up about the event in 2016, during a visit to Good Morning Britain. “It did happen quick and it just felt right, it made sense,” he says of the nuptials. “There was no great plan to any of it, to be honest. We were on holiday, and we said, ‘Why don’t we get married too?’ And then the next minute …. There probably should have been some planning, but it all worked out.”
He adds, “Honestly, we had both our families on holiday at the same time, just randomly, and we said, this is a good opportunity with everyone together. So we just did it.”
September 2010: They make their relationship red-carpet official.
Less than a year after their introduction, the lovebirds bring their romance to the red carpet when they attend the opening gala for the Resnick Pavilion at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This appearance basically confirms their relationship to the world, and for the event, Pataky goes with a classic little black dress, while Hemsworth matches her in a black suit with a white button-up underneath.

Hemsworth and Pataky’s first encounter takes place in early 2010, when they are introduced by Hemsworth’s talent agent, William Ward.
Years later, in 2015, Hemsworth opens up about his early days with Pataky in an interview with Elle. “There was no lightbulb moment,” he says, in reference to when he knew Pataky was “the one.” He explains, “From the first time we met, we just made sense. She’s fun. She’s outgoing, and she has a sense of humor and a passionate attitude toward life, which is nice to try to keep up with.”
